St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage - Tanika Charles and the Wonderfuls

Tanika Charles and the Wonderfuls

January 19, 2019 | 7 pm

www.st-lawrencestage.com

ACoustic Stage.JPG

CBC Music describes her as the "most buzzed-about soul singer in Toronto" and in just a few short years Tanika Charles has transformed from an emerging solo artist to a commanding performer and band leader, a staple of the Canadian soul scene. Both on stage and off, Edmonton-raised Charles presents an immutable charm, at times endearingly abrasive and honest in her vulnerabilities. Her art is inherently autobiographical. If Tanika’s singing it, she’s lived it.

Since 2010 Tanika has been lighting up stages near and far. Backed by her band The Wonderfuls, they have played festivals like NXNE, Pop Montreal, CBC Music Fest, TD Toronto Jazz Fest, TD Markham Jazz Fest, the AGO Massive Party, the Pan Am Games, and many more.

In April 2017 Tanika released her debut full-length album Soul Run internationally through Italian funk/soul label Record Kicks. Nominated for a Polaris Music Prize and 2017 Juno R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, the overarching sound is classic soul. Tanika has also appeared on television both as a reoccurring guest on CBC Kids, and as a lounge singer on Global TV’s Bomb Girls drama series. Her music has been featured on HBO’s Less Than Kind, ABC’s Rookie Blue, The CW’s Seed, and CTV’s Saving Hope. In 2017 she made her theatrical debut in the touring production Freedom Singer. Visit Tanika's website here.

St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage - Birds of Chicago

Birds of Chicago

March 2, 2019 | 7 pm

www.st-lawrencestage.com

ACoustic Stage.JPG

Birds of Chicago is a collective based around the husband and wife team of JT Nero and Allison Russell. Whether touring as a duo or with the full family band, Nero and Russell have emerged as two of the most compelling new voices in North American Roots music.

For several years Russell and Nero’s respective bands, Po' Girl  (based in Vancouver, and who graced our stage back in 2009), and JT and the Clouds (based in Chicago, IL), had collaborated extensively, but on 2011’s Mountains/Forests, released under the JT Nero banner, they tapped into the true, bewitching power of their voices together on an entire record.

For Birds of Chicago, every word counts. Every note counts. No gold-dusting, no filler. Music is the good news.  Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones, is a fine thing. Not too perfect, not at all saccharine, you’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classic soul.

Music this raw and soul-rich demands to be experienced live, and Birds of Chicago have developed a fervent following, touring 200 nights a year since their formation in late 2012.  For these Birds, singing for a room full of new people, hearts wide open, keeps off the cold and chases off the shadows. What a beautiful way to welcome March in to Morrisburg! The opening act for this performance will be announced closer to our show date. Visit Birds of Chicago’s website here.

Tickets for this show are $25 in advance and $30 at the door available online at the link below or in person at Upper Canada Playhouse Box Office and the McIntosh Inn in Morrisburg and Rurban Brewing in Cornwall. Cash only sales at our vendors, and please check their websites for their hours. All tickets are non-refundable. St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage - Rosie & the Riveters

Rosie & the Riveters

March 23, 2019 | 7 pm

www.st-lawrencestage.com

ACoustic Stage.JPG

Rosie & the Riveters are Farideh Olsen, Alexis Normand and Allyson Reigh and they are a powerhouse trio from Saskatoon who invite music lovers to revisit the spirit of Gospel music with a side of folk, and the charm of the 1940s. They take their name from Rosie the Riveter who was an iconic symbol of the women who worked in American factories during the Second World War. The character is credited with helping to nearly double the amount of working women in the country. Rosie & The Riveters are three fiercely talented women inspired by Rosie, the fashion and music of her time. But their unmistakable visual branding of red lipstick, pin curls, and overtly feminine costuming may be a bit deceiving, because this is not a throwback band. Listen closely to hear playfully defiant lyrics and confident talk-back harmonies. Every word, note, and movement in their live show is done purposefully to empower and challenge. Their most recent release, Ms. Behave, is  a collection of gritty, sultry, vintage-inspired folk anthems that paint a portrait of a woman’s voice in a man’s world. Their debut record, Good Clean Fun!, has an impressive list of accolades from sell-out shows across Canada to performing for British royalty and multiple nominations along the way. Rich Terfry of CBC Radio 2 says: “Rosie & the Riveters put on one of the best live shows you’ll ever see - you’ll go home with a big smile on your face." Visit their website here.

Tickets for this show are $20 in advance and $25 at the door available online at the link below or in person at Upper Canada Playhouse Box Office and the McIntosh Inn in Morrisburg and Rurban Brewing in Cornwall. Sarah Harmer

May 4, 2019 | 7 pm

www.st-lawrencestage.com

ACoustic Stage.JPG

Sarah Harmer was born in Burlington, Ontario. She credits its forests and fields with her development as a songwriter and singer.  As a teenager she sang with country rockers The Saddletramps and went on to form the rock band Weeping Tile while going to university in Kingston, Ontario. Weeping Tile released three albums and toured widely in Canada and the U.S.

Sarah recorded her first solo album ‘You Were Here’ in 2000. Her debut was lovingly received and led to extensive touring. Over the next three album releases she received and Polaris and Juno nominations, and two Juno awards for All Of Our Names (2004) album and Escarpment Blues (2006) tour documentary.

In 2005 Sarah helped form the citizen group PERL (Protecting Escarpment Rural Land) to raise awareness about the devastation of quarries to the Niagara Escarpment, the UNESCO World Biosphere in southern Ontario where she grew up. For eight years PERL worked tirelessly to see that the ecosystems and water sources were protected from new mining proposals. In 2012 an application for a large quarry on Mount Nemo in the heart of the escarpment was denied.

Through music and active engagement Sarah has learned the power of community and song. She is currently writing songs for a new album and performing a few shows in Canada with her band - this is a rare opportunity to see Sarah live, visit her website here. The opening act for this performance will be announced closer to our show date.

Tickets for this show are $45 in advance and $50 at the door available online at the link below or in person at Upper Canada Playhouse Box Office and the McIntosh Inn in Morrisburg and Rurban Brewing in Cornwall. Stef Paquette has been taking time to hear his inner voice, write new songs and simply live life. The renowned Franco-Ontarian singer-songwriter is also well known as a radio host across Northeastern Ontario with Le Loup FM and an actor in the popular TV series Hard Rock Medical and Les Bleus de Ramville
A natural showman with a wacky sense of humour, Stef Paquette loves being on stage and his audiences love seeing him there. Alone with his guitar and harmonica or along with his band, he has been crisscrossing Canada for years, playing countless festivals, concerts, major events and  school workshops. In 2015, Stef Paquette garnered the Trille Or (French Ontario’s music industry awards) for Best Male Performer as well as nominations for the Best Singer-Songwriter and the Radio-Canada Public’s Choice awards. His charismatic stage presence and his ability to rally fans are widely recognized, as recently indicated by his ProducersChoice award at the 2014 Contact Ontario's industry showcase and his 2013 Trille Or award for Best Album.

Opening this show will be Jessica Pearson & the East Wind. They graced our stage in one of our Intimate Acoustics lineups and the crowd was asking us to bring them back before they'd even finished their set. Jessica Pearson is a Canadian born storyteller with a voice like melting honey on a summers eve. Accompanied by the melodic bowing of Pat Bigelow on the upright bass and the sweet  fiddling of Maddy O’Regan, they bring to life tales of the past and express the beauty and heartbreak of the world today. After the release of their debut EP ‘Grave and Garden Songs’ in 2017, they have taken the stage at JunoFest, RBC’s Bluesfest and Manitoulin Country Festival and their music perfectly blends folk, roots and East Coast bluegrass. They're going to get this show warmed right up and we're looking forwarding to welcoming them back to the St. Lawrence Stage! Visit their website here.

Upper Canada Playhouse - Dean & Jerry:

2pm - Matinee - Closing

Playhouse audiences are in for a treat when the hit concert Dean & Jerry: What Might Have Been comes to town October 11 through 14. It’s a return engagement after selling out two years ago with an original run that packed houses and wowed audiences who got tickets and disappointed those who didn’t. In fact people travelled as far away as Belleville hoping to get last minute cancellations at the door for that original run. As promised, The Playhouse has brought it back for an encore this October and has already extended it four times to accommodate the demand. Created by Jesse Collins and starring Derek Marshall and Nicholas Arnold, it’s a live concert with a big difference-fabulous music, hilarious comedy and an engaging story. It features the timeless hits and hilarious bits from the most famous comedy duo of the 50’s-Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Backed by a dynamite live band, the show sweeps audiences back to a time remembered for the hits Everybody Loves Somebody, Sway, You’re Nobody Til Somebody Loves You, Volare, That’s Amore, Ain’t That A Kick In The Head, On an Evening In Roma, Return To Me, Standing On The Corner, Memories Are Made Of This, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Rockabye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody and many more. It also features the classic comedy routines that made this legendary entertainment partnership famous and takes a peak at their real-life relationship, begging the question ‘what if they had never split’?

Creator and director, Jesse Collins, is an Emmy-nominated director and 38-year television, film, stage & radio veteran. After many years directing and acting in long running television series (Katts & Dog, Wind at My Back), Dean and Jerry marks his return to musical variety entertainment – where he started on the CBC’s DuMaurier Search for the Stars in 1981. He directed The Playhouse’s Plaza Suite this season and is currently the Artistic Director at the Orillia Opera House.

Derek Marshall, a native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, has performed extensively as a singer and actor for more than twenty-five years in theatres, concert halls, clubs & casinos throughout Canada, USA and Europe. He has also been seen in such Playhouse concerts as Vegas Knights and Memories of the Summer of Love.

Nicholas Arnold is an accomplished performer, filmmaker, writer and speaker. His fascination with Jerry began when he was 13 and hasn't stopped. He directed an award-winning feature film and recently launched a new podcast, Paying Tribute – a look at nostalgia entertainment.

The band includes some of the best musicians in the country. Meredith Zwicker, musical director and pianist, has been seen in many Playhouse Christmas shows and most recently appeared in The Buddy Holly Story at the Thousand Islands Playhouse. John Minnis, on trumpet, guitar and keyboards, has enjoyed a career that has taken him around North America and the Caribbean. He continues to perform in Muskoka and the GTA, as well as being a music educator. Naomi Higgins, tenor & alto sax and flute, is a Toronto-based woodwind player, arranger, composer and private teacher who has been traveling the world on ships and with big bands.  Bass player Brian Quebec has been a freelance bassist playing genres ranging from classical to country and drummer Logan Coey is in his last year of the Bachelor of Music degree program at Humber College. He has performed all over Ontario with the Deerhurst Live show and several original artists including a performance on Canada Morning Live.

Audiences are encouraged to book soon for the limited engagement of this popular show. The Playhouse’s current show, Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fishing Derby, continues til September 30.
